2023 Honda Civic Spark Plugs DIY Technical Guide

Before ordering replacement parts or starting your repair, review the factory torque specifications, required tools, and critical vehicle gotchas below.

Important DIY Watch-Out for 2023 Honda Civic:

1.5L Turbo models: Ensure new spark plugs are OEM NGK Laser Iridium. Do not over-torque in the lightweight aluminum head.

Factory Specifications & Torque Ratings

Component / Parameter Factory Specification DIY Relevance
Wheel Lug Nut Torque 80 ft-lbs (19mm socket) Torque in criss-cross pattern after wheel install
Repair Difficulty Rating Easy to Moderate (30-60 minutes) Based on average DIY home garage setup
Size 14mm or 5/8" depending on 1.5L Turbo vs 2.0L naturally aspirated Factory standard replacement hardware
Torque 16 ft-lbs Factory standard replacement hardware

Recommended Tools Checklist

  • Spark Plug Socket (5/8" or 14mm with rubber/magnetic insert) Safely grip and extract spark plugs
  • 3/8" Drive Ratchet & Extensions (6"-10") Reach down deep spark plug wells
  • Torque Wrench (Inch-lbs or Low Ft-lbs) Ensure proper crush washer seal without stripping head
  • Dielectric Grease Coat inside of ignition coil boot to prevent flashover

Step-by-Step DIY Summary

  1. Access Coils: Remove the engine cosmetic cover. Disconnect the electrical connector for each ignition coil pack.
  2. Remove Coils: Remove the coil pack retaining bolt (usually 8mm or 10mm) and pull the coil boot straight up with a slight twisting motion.
  3. Extract Old Plugs: Lower the spark plug socket and extension into the tube. Break loose counter-clockwise and unscrew slowly. Inspect electrode color.
  4. Install New Plugs: Check gap against vehicle spec (pre-gapped iridium plugs must not be aggressively bent). Hand-thread the new plug 4-5 full turns to prevent cross-threading.
  5. Torque & Reassemble: Torque plugs to factory spec (typically 13–18 ft-lbs). Apply a dab of dielectric grease inside each coil boot, re-seat coils, tighten coil bolts, and reconnect harnesses.
