Step-by-Step DIY Summary

  2. Relieve Belt Tension: Fit a socket or belt tool on the tensioner pulley bolt. Rotate to release tension and slip the serpentine belt off the alternator pulley.
  3. Disconnect Electrical Connectors: Unplug the field/stator wiring harness plug and remove the protective rubber boot and nut holding the main B+ battery cable.
  4. Unbolt & Remove Alternator: Remove the through-bolts holding the alternator to the engine mounting bracket. Carefully pry or wiggle the alternator free.
  5. Install & Test Voltage: Install the new alternator and torque mounting bolts. Reinstall the B+ wire and wiring harness. Route the serpentine belt according to the diagram and verify all ribs seat into pulley grooves. Reconnect battery and measure 13.8V-14.5V across battery terminals with engine running.
